Being a teenager has always been hard. But today’s teens are carrying more than most adults realize — academic pressure, social anxiety, family stress, identity questions, and a world that never seems to slow down. Sometimes they shut down. Sometimes they act out. Sometimes they just go quiet.

At Therapy Worthwhile, we work with teens using evidence-based approaches that actually respect where they are — not where we think they should be. We help adolescents in Mission Viejo and across California understand what’s going on beneath the surface, build real tools for managing it, and start showing up as who they actually want to be.

WHAT WE HELP WITH

What Teen Therapy Can Help With

Anxiety and stress
  • School deadlines, college pressure, social dynamics, family tension — teens today are managing a lot. Therapy helps them understand what’s driving the anxiety and build real tools to work with it, not just push through it.
Depression and low mood

When a teen withdraws, loses motivation, or stops caring about things that used to matter — that’s worth paying attention to. We help teens name what’s going on and find a path back to themselves.

Trauma and difficult experiences

Many teens carry experiences they’ve never had words for — or that they’ve been told to move on from. We work with teens to process what happened in a way that’s safe, paced, and effective.

Identity and self-worth

Adolescence is a time of deep identity formation. We help teens explore who they are — including their values, cultural identity, and sense of self — without pressure to fit a mold.

Family and relational challenges

Conflict at home, difficulty communicating with parents, navigating friendships and peer pressure — therapy gives teens a space to work through these relationships and develop stronger communication skills.

School and performance pressure

Academic stress, perfectionism, fear of failure, ADHD challenges — we help teens develop coping strategies and a healthier relationship with achievement and learning.

HOW WE WORK WITH TEENS

How We Work With Teenagers

Teen therapy at Therapy Worthwhile is collaborative, evidence-based, and trauma-informed. We never look at what’s wrong with a teenager — we look at what’s happening around them, what they’ve been through, and what they need to move forward.

Our therapists use approaches that are proven to work with adolescents, including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

helping teens identify the thought patterns driving anxiety, depression, or behaviors, and learn to shift them

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

practical skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and navigating relationships

EMDR Therapy

for teens carrying trauma, difficult memories, or experiences that are still affecting them today

Attachment-Based Therapy

understanding how early relationships shaped how they connect, communicate, and trust

Person-Centered Approach

building a therapeutic relationship based on genuine respect for the teen’s experience and autonomy

A NOTE FOR PARENTS

For Parents: What to Know

If you’re reading this, you’re probably worried about your teenager. That matters, and it’s worth acting on.

Here’s what we want parents to know:

WHAT TO EXPECT

What to Expect in Teen Therapy

First session

The first session is a chance for your teen and their therapist to get to know each other. We may also spend some time with parents at the start to gather background — but the goal is for your teen to feel like this space belongs to them.

Ongoing sessions

Sessions are 50 minutes, typically once a week. The therapist will work with your teen to identify what they want to focus on and build a plan around their specific goals.

Parent involvement

We find ways to involve parents that support the work without undermining the teen's trust in the process. Your therapist will discuss this with you directly.

Telehealth option

Teen therapy is available via secure telehealth for California residents — useful for teens with busy schedules, those who prefer the comfort of their own space, or families outside the Mission Viejo area.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Teen Therapy

How do I know if my teenager needs therapy?

Signs worth taking seriously include: persistent sadness or withdrawal, significant changes in sleep or eating, loss of interest in friends or activities they used to enjoy, declining grades, increased irritability or anger, expressions of hopelessness, or anything that feels like a shift from who your teen normally is. You don’t need to wait for a crisis.

My teen doesn't want to go to therapy. What do I do?

Resistance is common. Many teens come in reluctantly and find, within a few sessions, that they actually want to be there. It can help to frame therapy not as something being done to them, but as a resource that’s theirs. Our therapists are experienced at building trust with teens who start out skeptical.

What's the difference between therapy and just talking to a friend?

A good therapist brings clinical training, objectivity, and a structured process that’s designed to create change — not just provide support. Therapy is a professional relationship with a clear purpose: to help you understand yourself and your patterns well enough to actually shift them.

Will you tell me what my teen says in sessions?

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of effective teen therapy. We keep session content private, with the exception of safety concerns (risk of harm to self or others). We’ll walk you through our confidentiality policy clearly at the start.

What ages do you work with?

We work with adolescents ages 13–17 in individual teen therapy. For younger children or family-level concerns, we can discuss whether family therapy is a better fit.

Do you offer telehealth for teens?

Yes. Telehealth sessions are available for teens across California. Many adolescents actually prefer the format — it’s more comfortable and fits into their schedule more easily.

Do parents attend sessions?

Generally, sessions are one-on-one with your teen. We may incorporate parent check-ins or brief joint sessions at key points in the process, always with your teen’s knowledge and buy-in.

What if my teen has been through trauma?

Our therapists are trained in trauma-informed approaches including EMDR — which can be especially effective for adolescents carrying difficult experiences. We work carefully and at a pace that feels safe for your teen.

Your Teen Deserves Real Support

Teenagers don’t always have the words for what they’re going through — but that doesn’t mean they don’t need help. Teen therapy at Therapy Worthwhile gives adolescents a space that’s genuinely theirs: to be honest, to work through what’s hard, and to figure out who they want to be.
